Electrical Installations in Hazardous Areas

Electrical installations in hazardous areas require the same robust inspection and testing regime as any other fixed electrical installation. The added consideration is that circuits and equipment may be located where flammable gases, vapours, mists or combustible dusts could give rise to an explosive atmosphere.

Our service is designed to help duty holders demonstrate that their electrical installations remain safe, compliant and suitable for continued use, while recognising the additional risks associated with working in flammable atmospheres.

Safety First

This service focuses on the condition, safety and integrity of the fixed electrical installation, including distribution boards, circuits, containment systems, earthing, bonding, protective devices, cabling and connected electrical equipment.

It is carried out in accordance with BS 7671 by engineers with the appropriate electrical inspection and testing competence, supported by hazardous area awareness and CompEx training where required.

EICR Reporting

Hazardous area fixed wire testing is not the same as a formal ATEX/DSEAR equipment inspection. Fixed wire testing and EICRs assess the electrical installation from an electrical safety and condition perspective, in accordance with BS 7671.

ATEX/DSEAR inspections, carried out to the relevant BS EN 60079 series standards, are additional to BS 7671. They assess the suitability, installation and ongoing condition of Ex-certified equipment and associated protection measures within classified hazardous areas.

Where both services are required, F.E.S. (EX) can advise on the most appropriate approach to ensure each duty is addressed correctly.

Hazardous Area Fixed Wire Services

Our hazardous area fixed wire testing service can include:

  • Periodic inspection and testing of fixed electrical installations within hazardous areas
  • Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs)
  • Initial verification of new or modified electrical installations
  • Inspection and testing of distribution boards, final circuits and control circuits
  • Continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, earth fault loop impedance and RCD testing, where applicable
  • Review of earthing and bonding arrangements
  • Identification and classification of electrical defects using recognised EICR coding
  • Clear reporting with observations, limitations and recommended remedial actions
  • Support with remedial works and defect close-out where required
