Barry Cunliffe – Senior Process Safety Engineer

When the opportunity arose for me to become a member of the team at F.E.S. (EX) in early 2021, my decision was driven by a combination of the enjoyment of the role that I had formerly occupied on a subcontractor basis, along with a realisation of the potential for a mutually beneficial relationship.

Throughout my time at F.E.S. (EX) Limited, my job role has evolved and brought new challenges and opportunities for growth. Now as Senior Process Safety Engineer, my day-to-day activities involve serving as an expert witness, conducting thorough incident investigations, offering guidance on regulatory compliance, such as the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 and the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000.

The remarkable support I have received from F.E.S. (EX) Limited extends beyond professional development. The work environment is one of collaboration, where colleagues and management have consistently been helpful, supportive, and undemanding. Moreover, F.E.S. (EX) Limited has implemented a range of support measures for their full-time employees, such as healthcare benefits, which have brought reassurance to families. They genuinely care about the well-being of their staff.

F.E.S. (EX)’s attractiveness as an employer goes beyond the support measures they provide. They value individuals who can seamlessly switch between being kind, friendly, and easy-going, while also delivering direct and concise advice to Managing Directors. The business doesn’t merely identify problems; they offer solutions, making them a sought-after employer in the industry.

To me, F.E.S. have been more than just an employer. They have been a lifeline during challenging times. My wife fell seriously ill, sadly deteriorating quickly before she passed away. The management team at F.E.S. showed exceptional compassion and understanding, enabling me to prioritise my personal life while still engaging in meaningful work. This level of flexibility and support is something I’ll forever be grateful for.

I have been a consultant for a quarter of a century, but before that I spent many years confined by the rigidity of the Civil Service during my tenure as a Process Safety Specialist Inspector at the HSE. My consultancy role at F.E.S. allows me to continue to have the freedom to manage my own time, enabling me to strike a harmonious work-life balance. This level of autonomy is invaluable and has positively impacted my professional performance and overall well-being.

If you are considering applying for a job for F.E.S. (EX) Limited, I wholeheartedly encourage you to seize the opportunity. This is a company that not only values your expertise but also cares deeply about your well-being. With F.E.S. (EX) Limited, you can embark on a fulfilling career where you are not just an employee, but a cherished member of a compassionate and supportive community.
