21 November 2022Bespoke DSEAR & ATEX Awareness Training

F.E.S. (EX) Limited has been engaged with the world’s largest automotive service organisations for almost a year, providing consultation, process safety services and training. We were recently asked to produce and deliver bespoke training courses to various appropriate levels of hierarchy across the business to promote DSEAR & ATEX Awareness.

As part of the client’s ongoing programme, the courses were scheduled to be delivered in 2022. By developing a good understanding of the client’s operations and requirements the course was developed and delivered within the prescribed time frame. We successfully delivered several training courses at the client’s premises as well as via remote video link, providing course notes and footage, along with hands-on examples.

At F.E.S. (EX) we tailor our course content to the client, which allows us to highlight how their facilities may be uniquely impacted by the risks involved within explosive atmospheres, specific to their operations. DSEAR regulations are standard across all industries, but understanding the risks relative to the client’s own facilities leads to an increased level of practical awareness.

Our ATEX Engineer responsible for developing and delivering the training said: “The delivery of awareness training, at various levels, is a regular service which we undertake. It is very interesting, seeing how candidates’ knowledge and appreciation of DSEAR grow throughout the course. I’m very happy with how it went as it promotes a greater knowledge of the risks in which candidates are working and promotes a better safety culture.”

Following the successful delivery of the training courses we are proud to have received positive feedback:

“Conclusive & In-depth information with good relation to the site’s requirements”

“Great course, very informative. I feel more confident to progress forward with Management of Change required, incorporating key fundamentals with ATEX/DSEAR/COMAH”

“Interesting. Gained good understanding of ATEX & DSEAR”

“Good Overview. Refreshed some previous points learnt on other courses”

If you would like more information about the explosive atmosphere training courses that we offer, or if you are interested in developing some bespoke DSEAR & ATEX training for staff at your business, please get in touch with our team who will be happy to help.

24 October 2022Combined Cycle Gas Turbine E&I Services

F.E.S. (EX) is proud to have developed and maintained an excellent long-standing working relationship over several years with our client, a Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Power Station situated in central UK. We have been carrying out works for this client on an annual basis, for over 9-years to-date, as part of a rolling programme.

The works involve ensuring that the installation of Electrical and Instrumentation equipment located within the defined hazardous areas (where potentially flammable atmospheres may be present) is installed and maintained in accordance with the legislative requirements under DSEAR. This is necessary for our client to continue providing on-demand energy products essential in supporting the UK’s changing grid landscape and transition to a low carbon economy.

Works are often undertaken during both planned and unplanned site outages, therefore, there is only a specific window of opportunity to undertake certain elements. We operate in an extremely efficient manner utilising our ExTrace® Asset Management and Data Gathering Programme to undertake asset registration, inspection and rectification to BS EN 60079 standards, ensuring a fluid and pragmatic approach in harmony with the client’s operational running.

Site presence can vary between 1-6 personnel, with remote support and back-up from a team of engineers and process safety personnel. A combination of hand tools and suitably certified ATEX test equipment was used in conjunction with our ExTrace® Asset Management and Data Gathering Programme installed upon ATEX certified Tablets, thus reducing the need for additional paperwork.

One of our E&I Inspectors involved in the works commented: “I am very familiar with carrying out the inspection of E&I equipment, it is what I do on pretty much a daily basis at various sites across the country. “Each job has its own little quirks and site procedures, but ultimately I need to work to a standard which is to be expected. I know that I am confident in the quality of my work and that it has surpassed the client’s expectations.”

The requirements for the installation, maintenance and inspection of E&I Equipment in Hazardous Areas requires specialist training such as CompEx, however equally as important as qualification is demonstrable competency. Our experienced and qualified personnel have the proven competency and engineering skills to conduct inspection and subsequent rectification upon Electrical, Instrument & Mechanical equipment located within explosive atmospheres in accordance with all current global standards.

If you would like to get in touch about our E&I services please contact us through the website or give us a call on 01472 598987 and our team will be happy to help.

22 September 2022Power Generation E&I Services

Our team has extensive experience in the design, procurement and installation of upgrades in the power generation sector. We recently completed work for a longstanding client in the industry, for whom we regularly carry out work across Europe.

The client’s scope was to complete electrical and instrumentation installation and upgrade works within the UK, as well as ATEX inspections during the planned outage. Increased levels of labour and a fast turn around were a necessity, due to the high-profile nature of the client’s outage.

There was a tight deadline to minimise any disruption caused by the outage, so our team assisted with this by undertaking as much pre outage work and preparation as possible before the planned outage occurred.

We coordinated our works with other contractors within restricted spaces to ensure the outage ran smoothly.

During the outage we provided 20-25 experienced CompEx approved Electricians working on day and night shifts in order to minimise any disruptions during the outage.

From start to finish the works took over 2 years, the majority of which was pre-outage and prolonged due to the pandemic. The preparation was a success as we completed the work during the outage within just 4 weeks.

Our knowledge and experience of the client’s site and systems and meticulous preparation proved to be invaluable to ensure the works were completed to the tight schedule.

If you would like to get in touch about our E&I services please contact us through the website or give us a call on 01472 598987 and our team will be happy to help.

23 May 2022Chemical Company Fined After Worker Suffered Burns

A chemical company was fined recently, after a worker suffered 13 percent burns to his right arm and hand following the ignition of flammable vapours at their site.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found “there was an extraction system at the lip of the manway lid to remove vapours from this area, but it was not adequate to prevent a build-up of a flammable atmosphere. The ignition source is likely to have been a spark from the metal scoop, or static electricity build up on the workers clothing.”

Within the UK there is a legal requirement for a DSEAR risk assessment where there is a potential for the creation of explosive or flammable atmospheres and would identify adequate control measures.
